Blender 4.1

Old Auto Smooth

Frustrated by how Auto Smooth changed in Blender 4.1? This brings back the familiar interface and keeps the auto smooth modifier pinned to the bottom of the stack.

What it does

The new system in Blender 4.1 felt lacking to me, so I built a replacement. Old Auto Smooth mimics the behaviour of previous Blender versions: a familiar interface, and the new auto smooth modifier stays at the bottom of the stack at all times.

This add-on is experimental — call it alpha or beta, whichever you prefer. I haven't had extensive time for testing, but I'd rather share it than sit on it. If you hit any issues, contact me on Discord or by email.
Usage

How to use it

  1. After installing, find the old Normals panel in the Object Data tab of the Properties area.
  2. Toggle auto smooth on and off there and adjust the angle — the add-on manages the modifier in the background for you.
  3. Or right-click in the viewport and choose Shade Smooth by Angle (OAS), the same way you'd use Shade Smooth or Shade Flat.
Note

Also available free

This add-on is also available for free on my Gumroad store.
